Change for Change

How many times have you noticed that your handbag was weighted down with coins. Or, how about that jingle in your pockets from coins. Often times change is dumped on countertops, dressers in ashtrays and numerous other places.

I have a large, plastic water bottle that the entire family uses to collect spare change. Any coins acquired were placed into the jar. Coins were collected between New Years Day and Thanksgiving. On Black Friday the coins were taken to the coin machine. Monies collected were divided between my two kids to be spent on gifts for those on their Christmas list. This idea of saving for others seemed to make them happy. Saving like this gave my children sense of responsibility and pride knowing that the money accumulated went to others.

More recently, a Kerry enthusiast named Fran suggested that funds could be raised for the Kerry Blue Terrier Foundation by dropping all the loose coins into a jar. When the jar becomes full, the coins are counted, exchanged for dollars and dollars donated to the foundation.

During the warm weather months, the jar fills quickly. The family is out and about more, buying and spending frequently. Since the pandemic and the onset of colder weather, it has taken longer to fill. This jar is estimated to fill in three months.

We live with a Kerry crew, all rescues except one. With family members on board, we grabbed a jar, marked it off in quarter sections. At each milestone reached, one family member would choose a treat to celebrate-burgers, popcorn, ice cream...anything in the house.

We kept saying, “change for change,” as coins were dropped in the jar each day. Indeed, every penny, nickel, dime, or quarter will be donated to make a change in the life of a rescue. Rescue is not easy, nor is it cheap. Every bit of pocket change donated goes towards changing the life of a Kerry in need. Change can make a difference! Change has made a difference!

You can be an integral part of change. Consider a “change” for donating to the Kerry Blue Terrier Foundation.
